Pet Ultrasound FAQs

When a veterinarian suggests an ultrasound, it usually means we need more information. We need to see something that a physical exam or a blood test just can't show us.

Pet Ultrasound FAQs

But for a pet owner, hearing that your pet needs a "procedure" can be stressful.

At Pet-Agrees Wellness Services, we want to take the fear out of diagnostics. We believe that the more you know, the better you can care for your furry family member. Here are the answers to the most common questions we hear about pet ultrasound in our clinic.

"Is an ultrasound the same thing as an X-ray?"

No, they are actually very different.

Think of an X-ray as a photograph of the hard structures in the body. It is perfect for looking at broken bones or spotting a metal object your dog swallowed.

An ultrasound is more like a movie. It uses sound waves to create a real-time image of the soft organs. We use it to look at the texture of the liver, the thickness of the bladder wall, or the beating of the heart. When you search for a pet ultrasound near you, you are looking for a tool that sees what X-rays miss.

"Will it hurt my pet?"

Not at all. This is the best part.

An ultrasound is completely non-invasive. There are no needles and no incisions. The only thing your pet will feel is the handheld probe gliding over its skin. In fact, many pets find the rhythmic movement of the probe relaxing.

"Why do you have to shave their fur?"

This is the one part owners are sometimes surprised by.

Sound waves do not travel well through air or hair. To get a clear picture, the probe needs to make direct contact with the skin. We usually shave a small square of fur over the area we are examining and apply a special warm gel. Don't worry—it grows back quickly, and it is a small price to pay for a clear diagnosis.

"Will my pet need to be sedated?"

In most cases, no.

Because the procedure is painless, most dogs and cats are happy to lie on a comfortable table while our team works. However, if your pet is extremely anxious or in pain from its illness, we might use a mild sedative just to help it relax. We want the experience to be stress-free.

"Why should I choose Pet-Agrees Wellness Services?"

You shouldn't have to travel hours to a big city specialist for advanced care.

We have invested in the technology to provide high-quality diagnostics right here in Gordonsville, TN. If you are looking for a veterinarian near you who can handle the diagnosis and the treatment in one place, we are your team.
